Following the demise of Instant Replay, Hammond man Rod Spark and drummer Scott Kennedy stayed in touch through their mutual love of the British Mod scene and all the groovy Hammond and Horn driven music that entails. When Scott suggested a jam with him and a bass player he'd come across, ex punk legend, Bruce Wagener, the foundations of Modus were laid. With the introduction of former Instant Replay front person Sarah Kennedy, the then un-named band recorded some demos with a variety of different guitarists. The interest generated by these demos convinced the band to get a permanent guitarist and continue what they'd started. Once again Scott came up trumps finding the excellent Mel Johnson who came aboard fresh from The Belgranos. By now the band had been christened, Modus. With many other commitments, the band's first year wasn't exactly a hive of industry until October 2003 when a debut gig at the popular Edinburgh club GoGo persuaded the band to get down to work and get a set together. At the time of writing, the band have a eclectic set based around 60's style soul, jazz, rock and pop. There is no real phrase to describe the band's music although do expect swirling Hammond, stomping Northern Soul drumming, wah wah guitar licks, adventurous but rock solid bass lines, stuttering funky Fender Rhodes piano and uplifting female vocals.
